No Last Bow - The Enduring Appeal of Sherlock Holmes

The game is afoot once again as Jim Zunic and Len Barcousky explore the mysterious and enduring appeal of Sherlock Holmes. Both men are members of the Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers, a Pittsburgh-based Sherlock Holmes appreciation society. in this recording they talk with veteran newsman P.J. Maloney. Mr. Maloney's 40-year career included stints with local public television stations and as the long-time morning anchor at KQV news radio.

The Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers are named after the British Army regiment in which Holmes’s friend, Dr. John Watson, would have served, had he been a real person. (But for many members of the Fusiliers, Holmes, Watson and their arch-enemy James Moriarty are every bit as real as Franco Harris or Mayor Bill Peduto!)

The pair also talk about Holmes’s creator, or “literary agent,” Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Doyle made one visit to Pittsburgh. Surprisingly, he was not here to talk about Sherlock Holmes but about his passion for spiritualism.

Topics covered include a look at the appeal of the most famous fictional detective of all time and his appearances on Pittsburgh stages and screens.  Mr. Zunic, a founding member of the Fusiliers, discusses the history of the organization.  Members continue to meet monthly to read and discuss Conan Doyle’s four novels and 56 short stories. The Fusiliers is a scion society of the Baker Street Irregulars, the first Sherlockian literary society in the world.  For information about joining the Fusiliers, contact Len Barcousky at lbarcousky@gmail.com.
