Britsburgh Literary Society members will share the emotionally powerful experience of live theatre in PICT’s production of Jane Eyre. Then immediately after the performance they’ll be part of Britsburgh Talk-Back with the cast and Artistic and Executive Director of Jane Eyre, Alan Stanford, who adapted the novel for the stage. Britsburghers are welcome to enjoy a cup of tea and a tasty scone while participating in the discussion.

Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre is one of the most unforgettable characters in English literature. The novel tells the story of a child who is rejected by her family and goes on to experience a series of cruel betrayals, but whose fortitude and pluck is ultimately rewarded. Appropriate for all ages.

PICT Classic Theatre brings the young protagonist from the desolate, yet beautiful moors of Yorkshire to WQED’s Fred Rogers Studio. After the performance, enjoy a cup of tea and a tasty scone before settling in for Britsburgh Audience Talk-Back with the cast and director of Jane Eyre. Leading the discussion will be Alan Stanford, Artistic and Executive Director of PICT and author of the stage adaptation of Jane Eyre. Stanford began his career in Dublin and was principal director of the Gate Theatre Dublin for nearly twenty years. Stanford is now in his seventh year as director of PICT - Pittsburgh’s Classic Theatre. As part of the discussion, Britsburghers will be encouraged to reflect on how this 150-year-old story speaks to them in today’s world.

Some quotes to reflect on:

“I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being with an independent will.”

“I can live alone, if self-respect and circumstances require me so to do. I need not sell my soul to buy bliss. I have an inward treasure born with me, which can keep me alive if all extraneous delights should be withheld, or offered only at a price I cannot afford to give.”

“I had not intended to love him; the reader knows I had wrought hard to extirpate from my soul the germs of love there detected; and now, at the first renewed view of him, they spontaneously revived, great and strong! He made me love him without looking at me.”
