St. George's Day, the patron saint of ENGLAND, is celebrated each year on April 23rd (Monday).  It also coincides with William Shakespeare's birthday, 454 years ago and his death, 402 years ago.

In the 17th century Shakespearean actors performed in pubs, at fairs and on the street; they had to compete against the noise of the crowd who shouted, hurled oranges and tried to join in with their performance. Let's raise our glasses to toast St. George and William Shakespeare on Saturday April 21st at the Leaning Cask Brewing Co., in Springdale, PA

Join us and The New Renaissance Theatre Company to experience Shakespeare the way it was intended: with food and drink. Shakespeare’s actors didn't need rehearsal and neither do we! Find out why Shakespeare worked that way and experience how fast-paced and fun his plays can be, with a selection of scenes about England, that Scepter'd Isle, ale, sack and other libations.

Meet Andy Kirtland, Britsburgh Arts Society leader, Artistic Director of NRTC and cast members….. Find out more about the company online at www.newrentheatre.com.

What attendees should expect:

Shakespeare: Our aim is to introduce you to the unrehearsed cue script technique, an historically informed practiced based upon Shakespeare’s working conditions, our own research and experience. It doesn't matter how well attendees are acquainted with Shakespeare. Those who know him well will see something different. Those who don’t know him will make a new friend!

ShakesBeer: Our friends at the Leaning Cask have taken their love of Britain and British beer and brought it to Pittsburgh. We will tour the brewery (a rarity indeed) and sample the goodly ales with dogs as their theme. Enjoy a most pleasant afternoon with great company. Cry God for Harry, England and Saint George!

The Pub is open as usual to all. Your Shakespeare is FREE, but we will be passing around the hat for the actors - all money collected will go to help fund this summers NRTC programs.

REGISTRATION REQUIRED for a TOUR of the brewery followed by BEER FLIGHT TASTING with proprietor and master brewer, Josh Lipke.  Note: Registration at the door is limited to first 6 people only, so please register to save money and guarantee your attendance on the tour n' tasting!

Happy hour prices have been extended to Britsburghers throughout the evening (4-8pm)!

Programme:

  • 4pm - 6pm - Unrehearsed Shakespeare in two 30 minutes performances

  • 6pm - 7pm - Tour of the brewery; beer flight tasting including 2 'Shakesbeer' ales, brewed especially for St. Georges Day!

  • 7pm - 8pm - More Unrehearsed Shakespeare

A Britsburgh production in partnership with the New Renaissance Theatre Company and the Leaning Cask Brewing Co.
